Orthopedic Surgery Preparation FAQs
Planning for surgery can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to make the process as smooth as possible. Below are answers to the most common questions as you prepare for your procedure at Edgerton Hospital.
-
Do I need to use Hibiclens soap before surgery?
Yes.
- Wash with Hibiclens for 3 days before surgery and again the morning of surgery.
- Use the soap from the neck down only.
- If washing your hair, use your regular shampoo first, then rinse hair and body thoroughly.
- Wash your face with your regular soap or water only.
Do NOT use Hibiclens on your eyes, ears, mouth, genital area, or deep wounds. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or nurse.
-
When should I schedule my surgery?
Please allow at least 4 weeks before your chosen surgery date so we can complete all required pre-surgery steps.
-
What if I’ve had a recent joint injection?
If you’ve had an injection in the joint where surgery is planned, surgery must be scheduled at least 3 months after the injection date.
-
Should I let my specialists know about my surgery?
Yes. If you see a specialist (such as a cardiologist or pulmonologist), let them know about your upcoming surgery. They may want to see you beforehand to ensure you are cleared.
-
Can I get dental work before or after surgery?
- No dental cleanings or dental work for 6 weeks before and 3 months after joint replacement surgery.
- After 3 months, you must take antibiotics before all dental appointments.
- Call our office for your prescription: 608-561-6729.
-
Is a CT scan required?
Yes, a custom CT scan is required for robotic surgeries. Once we have prior authorization, we’ll contact you to schedule.
- If insurance denies coverage, we will discuss options with you.
- Edgerton offers a flat-rate cash payment option if needed.
-
What about my pre-op appointment?
Pre-op appointments must be completed 30 days before surgery. We will schedule this for you and include details in your surgery packet.
- At your appointment, you’ll need:
- Lab work (including HgbA1C if diabetic or pre-diabetic)
- Please notify your specialists about your surgery so any extra testing can be ordered in advance.
-
Will I go home the same day?
Yes. This is an outpatient procedure, so patients typically go home the same day. You must have a support person available at home to help during your recovery.
-
Will I get a call before surgery?
Yes. A nurse will call a few days before your surgery to:
- Review your health history
- Give you your arrival time
- Share any diet restrictions
If you do not receive a call by the day before surgery, please contact the Assessment Nurse at 608-884-1340.
