Edgerton Hospital Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness

To celebrate October as breast cancer awareness month, Edgerton Hospital is encouraging women to schedule their mammograms, and rewarding those who already have, by offering fun incentives. Anyone who has completed a mammogram at Edgerton Hospital between November 1, 2021 and October 31, 2022, will have their name put in a drawing to win a pink KitchenAid mixer. And, anyone who schedules their mammogram and bone density test at the same time will be entered for a chance to win a pink themed gift basket. Drawings will take place on October 31st. Appointments can be made by calling 608-561-6657.

According to the National Cancer Institute, one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Edgerton Hospital’s 3D digital mammogram machine is the latest advancement in technology and offers women (and men) a more accurate way to find abnormalities and determine which abnormalities may be important. The 3D mammogram largely eliminates recalls triggered when normal layers of tissue overlap and appear as a mass. This is because it takes pictures of thin slices of the breast from different angles, and computer software reconstructs an image in a process similar to a CT scan.

Early detection is key when it comes to breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Early detection includes doing monthly breast self-exams, and scheduling regular clinical breast exams and mammograms.
